By a happy coincidence of ancient stone and being sheltered by a cliff, a small community survives the aftermath of a "clean" bomb by sheltering within its walls.

At first the community is obsessed with the everyday challenges of life - what to eat, drink, will there be fallout? But as the novel progresses, and we learn of other survivors, it begins to look at the very nature of human behaviour when stripped of the facade of civilization.

Malevil, Robert Merle Malevil is a science fiction novel by French writer Robert Merle. It was adapted into a film directed by Christian de Chalonge and starring Michel Serrault, Jacques Dutronc, Jacques Villeret and Jean-Louis Trintignant.

The story's events take place in rural France in the late twentieth century. The protagonist is Emanuel Comte, former school director, now turned farmer and landowner.

He is also an owner of a tourist attraction - an old castle called Malevil after t Malevil, Robert Merle Malevil is a science fiction novel by French writer Robert Merle.

He is also an owner of a tourist attraction - an old castle called Malevil after the nearby village.

Comte is a highly motivated, well-respected person with a talent for diplomacy and leadership. By chance, Emanuel and several of his friends find themselves in the wine cellar of the castle during the unexpected outbreak of nuclear war.

The survivors find their surroundings reduced to ashes and rubble. Together under the leadership of Emanuel they start to rebuild. They later discover that other people and animals have survived in nearby farmsteads and villages.

Nature begins anew and an agrarian society starts to reform. From time to time more survivors show up, some bringing death and destruction with them.

What a mess. God, w What a mess. God, will I ever learn? In pages of exposition and tedious writing there are three well written scenes. It doesn't matter what they are because you won't read this book.

The remaining pages read like a poorly written how-to manual providing painfully dull detail of fortifying your 12th century French castle after a nuclear event.

The author must have spent a decade working through every single possibility; he has his characters embody the different opinions of what should be done but leaving Emmanuel the narrator and protagonist always left making the final, and best, solution.

Did I say characters? I meant males. Because the females in this book exist only to be fucked or fought after. I have no idea what Merle is like in real life, but he is definitley no Theroux writing mysogony.

Hearing my wife groan over the constantly poorly written scenes and female characters was the Greek Chorus to this dreck.

I have only kicked two books across the room after finishing them in disgust. This one was so bad I have remorse now for punting the other.

Most are familiar with this sort of novel. Odd pockets of civilization survive the ultimate destruction. A battle that gives no warning, no vibes at all.

There were no preparations to make, because Who Knew? With Malevil by Robert Merle Written and translated from the original French in With people that happened to be together in a safe place at the right time.

Very little of the story is devoted to the Before Time. We are given snipets of information about the participants in the survival, but the greatest part of the book is dedicated to the emotional, physical, and yes, the spiritual survival of the members.

And I use the word 'members' very seriously. These people are members of the new civilization, a civilization that must be very careful in the directions it takes and the choices it makes as well as the battles it must fight.

The main protagonist Emmanuel is one of the strongest characters I have encountered in fiction. It is his personality that makes the book work IMO.

His courage and decency form the pattern of the new path they must travel. And yes, it is a love story as well, although not in the way you'd think.

This book is in the top ten of my favorites of all time, I have reread it I don't really know how many times. Just recently I've begun it again, and was surprised.

How many "end of the world" books do you know that begin with an analysis of Proust's madeline scene? I'd not attempted Proust the last time I read this book, so I had my laugh out loud moment, and sigh for the day.

This book has all the ingredients One of the few books that no matter how many times I read it, there are still scenes that can bring tears to my eyes.

So, if you can find this book, buy it and enjoy! This would have been a good enough book if 1 It wasn't so extremely long, and more importantly 2 The narrator wasn't so disgustingly male-chauvinist I really liked the beginning, the disaster, the starting of a new mini-society, but then the repetitiveness of how women are either whores, old crones or children and how they must be shared equally really got on my nerves.

And what are the body, heart and soul of society? It is also the soul corresponding to our present level of civilization. I was simplifying things in order to avoid shocking him.

But I had shocked him nevertheless. He went a little red and began blinking. That meant he was about to counterattack.

For example Marxism. It has no purpose to serve in a primitive agrarian communism. Psychologically it is very deep and finally it analyses and reveals all the intellectual values of the modern civilization.

My personal experience is that novels translated into English often have an odd feeling to them. A sense that I'm missing something.

An intangible if you like. I've always believed that being able to read the novel in it's original language French in this case would aide in a greater understanding of the subtleties and nuances of the story.

But I was a lousy foreign language student in school and barely eked out a C- in German. I never went near French. So I have to be content with reading the My personal experience is that novels translated into English often have an odd feeling to them.

So I have to be content with reading the English language version of Robert Merle's post-apocalyptic classic.

In many ways it reminded me of Pat Frank 's classic post apocalyptic novel Alas, Babylon There is much in common with the two novels.

There is a nuclear exchange which goes unexplained in "Malevil". The protagonists live in a rural area with a small town village and they are forced to rely on their own wits and ingenuity after the nuclear exchange has taken place and the modern world ceases to exist.

There are hurdles to overcome and dangers to be vanquished. The community comes together, survives with tragic losses of course and eventually prospers - sort of.

There is even a sense that in the end the survivors are better off having returned to a more simple, but robust life.

A life based on self-sufficiency and honest democracy uncluttered by professional politicians and professional instigators.

Like Frank's classic there is a feeling that Merle is romanticizing the "good old days" just a little though and ,like Frank's novel, Merle's characters are very lucky.

Good post-apocalyptic novels are really nothing more than adventure novels in which our modern heroes are forced to return to a type of frontier existence.

Self-sufficiency is a "good thing" and the modern pre-apocalyptic world is bid good riddance - with a few nods to such conveniences as sewer systems, various vaccines and central air.

Often the writer's politics and philosophy play into the writing, but usually PA stories hold out hope. If not then you get The Road by Cormac McCarthy.

A bleak and unrelenting pessimistic novel of a future in which the only winner is going to be death. Malevil is of the former.

Somewhat awkward to read the English version , at times, it nevertheless pulls you in and keep you interested in the characters and their struggle to not only survive but to hold onto civilization albeit in a truncated form.

As the rest of the world we follow the situation around COVID In January or February, not many people would guess what will be the development of the epidemic and which restrictive measures will be introduced.

Cancellation of sport and cultural events, significant restrictions on movement and closure of the state borders seemed unimaginable.
